Eman Alosimi is an visual artist based in Riyadh, where she currently lives and works. In 2016, Eman graduated from the Arts and Design College at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, with a major in photography and prints. Eman is genuinely looking forward to what and where one belongs, alongside his, her, and/or their identities and the impact of his, her, and/or their profound personal experiences.

Artists face difficulties while specifying an art school to which their work belongs. How does that apply to you?

I believe art has reached an unprecedented level of flexibility worldwide. Hence, this is no longer a difficulty that faces artists as classifying an artwork is the audience’s and art critics’ job. In my opinion, artists do not seek a group or a school that they belong to, but instead, they seek various means in which they could express their thoughts.

How can you describe the current Saudi art scene?

The art scene in the Gulf developed generally in the past five years and has become an important source of investment. Many initiatives and institutions, such as Ithraa and Misk Art, are currently interested in this field in the Saudi art scene.

What are the contributions of independent art initiatives in your opinion?

I see that the specialists’ responsibilities lie in establishing initiatives dedicated to supporting artists and culturing the community. Currently, different initiatives have profound objectives with clear impact: Initiatives that reserve tours for Saudi artists around art exhibitions in the Gulf, initiatives dedicated to organizing art talks, and initiatives that purely seek the development of the arts in our country.

What are the challenges those initiative face, and how can culture-related establishments - whether government-based or private - to help them?

The challenges differ from an initiative to the other, but in my opinion, the challenges have been slightly demolished due to the 2030 vision, and it is easier for initiatives to organize and direct exhibitions and other events.
