We created Kawalees to highlight the growth in Saudi cinema and document the stories behind it.
Our first Kawalees session was with two artists and filmmakers, Sarah Brahim and Mohammad Alfaraj. We watched together three short films of their creation: The Dance of Olive Trees in the Wind, Roofless, and Farmers’s Ghost. Sarah and Mohammad later explained to us the background and stories that inspired these films. They also answered our questions about the themes these films address and the techniques that were used.
We can’t wait to share more Saudi films with you, and we’ll be announcing our second session soon! Stay tuned.
