Kan yama kan

Kan yama kan” was one of the very first phrases we all learned despite the differences in the geographies of our upbringings. It reminds us of our mothers’ hugs, visits to our grandparents’ place, and the few moments marking the beginnings of stories we’ll never forget.

We tell stories to sleep. We tell stories to have fun. We tell stories to remember. We tell stories to document. We tell stories to survive. And we tell stories to resist. Since we tell our stories for different reasons, the way we choose to tell them differ as well -- some of us choose to write, and some choose to sing. Some take photographs, and some paint.

That’s why Ward and Unootha collaborated to create Kan yama kan, a monthly educational event featuring women from regions across the Gulf. They’ll tell us their stories, how they tell it, and introduce us to the insights of their medium of interest. We hope to highlight through this collaboration the various ways, ranging from photography to poetry, that one can use to tell their story, as well as the tips and tricks surrounding technicalities of handling a specific medium.
