Saudi cinema is experiencing unprecedented growth — independent filmmakers from all backgrounds and ages in Saudi are beginning to share their stories and artistry through film. Since our interest lies in documenting the Saudi art scene in its various forms, including film and visuals in general, we want to watch their movies together and learn more about their inspiration and techniques. We want to ask them questions about their topics of interest, the difficulties they face in filming and creating films, and everything in between. That’s why we’re thrilled to share with you our latest initiative, Kawalees.
Kawalees is the Arabic word for “behind the scenes,” and it encapsulates the essence of this initiative: getting to watch Saudi films and learning everything about them directly from the people who wrote and made them. Every month, we’ll host a Saudi-based filmmaker and watch their film together. They’ll introduce us to the inspiration behind the film, why they chose this medium specifically, and any other questions you may have.
If you’re — or know — a Saudi-based filmmaker who’d be interested in being part of this initiative, email us at contact@wardnt.com with “Kawalees” as the subject.
