Kan yama kan #1: Zine-Making with Fatima Al Jarman

kan yama kan post.jpeg

We love stories at Ward, and that’s why we started the Kan yama kan initiative in collaboration with Unootha. The main goal is to introduce everyone to new tools and media that they can use to tell their own stories.

Every month, we host a new guest who introduces us to their medium of interest. Our first guest was Fatima Al Jarman, the founding and editor-in-chief of Unootha. Fatima is a writer and illustrator who makes zines to tell stories. In her workshop, which took place last Friday (February 26, 2021), she introduced us to the history of the word “Zine,” some of the zines she published in the past, and why she likes zines. She also taught the attendees how to make their own zine following a very simple method. Here are some of the zines the attendees made:

Milk Tea

This was Jumanah Malibari’s first zine to make. She decided to make it about milk tea because she had a cup before the workshop. Follow Jumanah on Twitter.
